September 6 & 7 - The members of St. John Lutheran Church, Ash Creek, of rural McCook invite you to the events of their Mission Festival on Saturday and Sunday! Gary Thies, Mission Development Director for the Nebraska District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, will give four (completely different) presentations. The first is during an Ice Cream Social (yum!) on Sat. at 7 p.m. There, Gary will speak on youth mission activities. Then Sunday morning at 9:30 Gary will speak during a combined Bible Class and Sunday School hour. Worship begins at 10:30 a.m., where Gary will make his third presentation. At the meal (yes, more food!) immediately following the service, Gary will give his final talk. The church is located at 39097 Road 712, McCook, NE (9 miles southeast of McCook.) September 6-7- McCook Balloon Fest at the Red Willow County Fair Grounds.  Massive Hot Air Balloon Launch each day at 7:30 am.  Launch times may be delayed or moved to accommodate inclement weather.  Additional activities available during both days. September 7 - Deadline to purchase your tickets for the catered meal for Peace Lutheran's 100th Anniversary Celebration.  Tickets will NOT be available at the door.  You may purchase your tickets from Vaunda Hyde at 1405 East Fairacres Dr. McCook, Nebraska.  345-3354.  The dinner will follow the services on September 21st and will be served at the Red Willow County Community Building.  Tickets are:  Adults-$11.45; Children ages 4-8 $4.50 and children 3 and under are free!

Thursdays - Feeding HIS Flock FREE community supper, every Thursday at Memorial United Methodist Church from 5:30 - 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall in the basement of the church located at the corner of Norris and E Streets.  Handicapped entrance is on the west side of the church.  Regular entrance to the Fellowship Hall is on the south side of the church. On the menu for the 11th - Baked spaghetti casserole; the 18th - BBQ pulled pork sandwiches.

September 27-Third Annual Backyard Barbecue Competition.  Entry fee for a team is $20 which includes a T-shirt and two rib-eye steaks.  Steaks will be distributed at 1 pm in Norris Park following the Heritage Days Parade and must be turned in for judging between 5 and 5:30 pm.  For more information and an entry form, please contact the Chamber of Commerce at 345-3200. Prizes include a sparkling new Weber Grill and, of course, plenty of cash! Enter soon though - the entry deadline is Monday, the 15th!

September 16 - Christian pop-rock band Esterlyn will be performing at McCook Christian Church on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Hailing from Boise, Idaho, the band will encourage and challenge you with their perceptive lyrics and modern sound. Best of all, the admission cost is only $3! With today's ticket prices, that's a deal that should be pretty hard to pass up!

September 19 -  Poolside brunch at the Chief Poolside Friday, September 19, 2008 at 10 am.  The cost is $4.00 inclusive. The Chief Poolside is located at 612 West B Street in McCook.  The special feature is:  "Big Cats" The Safari of Her Life.  Guest speaker will be Joyce Worrell of Albany, Missouri.  She raised baby tigers and lions!  Reservations are appreciated by September 17, 2008.  Call Brook at 345-5104 and if no answer, leave a message.  Free Child Care is available.  Notify caller when making reservations.  Give names and how many children.  Reservations must be honored, canceled or used by a friend.  Invite a friend.  She will be glad you did. 

September 21-Peace Lutheran Church in McCook 100 Anniversary Celebration.  Catered dinner to follow services at the Red Willow County Community Building.  Tickets will NOT be available at the door and must be purchased by September 7, 2008.  Contact Vaunda Hyde at 345-3354.

September 26-28 - It's time for the annual "Grand Duke Alexis Rendezvous!" It's a three-day long reenactment of the "Last Great Buffalo Hunt!" Don't miss two and a half days full of celebration, historical presentations, tribal dance performances, monument tours, primitive camping, mountain man games, and much, much more! Highlights will no doubt include the ever popular black powder shoots, and the hawk and knife throws. Also, the Gospel Lites Quartet from North Platte will be providing some of the entertainment on Sunday - you won't want to miss them. Don't worry - there is always more than enough to see and do at the Rendezvous!
